Can guys and girls be “just” friends?

In her latest blog post, Laura Sessions Stepp examines the notion of straight, opposite-sex, platonic friends.  Anything that requires a name that long must be complicated, right?

Well, I’d argue that friendships – be they same-sex or opposite – are complicated no matter what. Over the years, I’ve had to learn, for example, the delicate calculus that governs how not to date/ approach/ come on to a guy my best friend likes/ liked/ dated/ wanted to date/ saw first in a crowded bar/ etc. So does sex – however slim the possibility of it happening may be – really cloud things that much?

Tell us in the comments – do you have friends of the opposite sex? Is it ever hard to maintain the friendship without slipping into hook-up territory? Are there advantages to friends of the opposite sex that same-sex friendships don’t have?
