Prego Scare By Text Message

The first text message my young traveling companion got stopped her in the middle of our conversation.

It read: Hey. I have a big secret I cant tell u til monday tho. But its huge girl nd im scared.

My companion typed:

Ur prego??? Ahhhhhhh

My companion’s friend, whom I’ll call "Worried", came back: They tested me today nd they r gunna call to tell me if it was positive or negative on monday. Im sooo scared!

And so began a saga for my companion, a college freshman, that started last Thursday in my car and continued until late last night.

The first text from Worried arrived as we were driving south on I-95, headed to a conference to talk about, of all things, young people and sex.

When I first saw Ben Stone, the 23-year-old slacker in the movie "Knocked Up," get mushy over his prospective whoops-baby, I thought, what a bunch of malarkey. Guys in their 20s don't want to be papas.

So, uh, Got Any STDs I Should Know About?

Ever been really nervous about asking someone about their sexual history and STIs, then ended up having a beautiful, completely unawkward conversation? Maybe not. And that's okay. I'd wager that for many of us there are few, if any, ideal moments to bring up contraception and sexually transmitted infections (STIs, more commonly known as STDs), but that doesn't mean it doesn't have to be done. Furthermore, no matter how sweet, open, and honest your partner is, you should never assume that s/he will volunteer information about sexual history or STIs, even if there's something you should know about.

The Hills Are Alive With The Sound of Really, Really Bad Ideas. . .

I should first admit that I don’t watch The Hills. I have a basic knowledge of the evolution of the show: it was born out of Laguna Beach, produced the spinoff The City, and it is chock-full of drama and lots and lots of good old-fashioned manipulation. The other day my friend sent me this clip with the warning: “It may make your head explode.”
