Reflections on Sex::Tech

I had the opportunity to attend ISIS’s terrific Annual Youth, Technology & Sexual Health (aka. Sex::Tech) Conference for the first time this year.  It was a great opportunity for me to continue my edification in the field of reproductive health, but not just as an attendee; The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy was a sponsor of this year’s conference and I was asked to participate in a panel entitled “National Prevention Programs: Effective Tools for Local Communities.”

True or False: 50% of Marriages End in Divorce?

A colleague of mine at The National Campaign was fuming.

“If there’s one thing every high school kid will tell you,” he said, “it’s that 50 percent of marriages fail. It’s a lie.”

Well, it’s not exactly a lie, if you look at marriage data from years ago, or combine all education and income groups. But it’s also not true if you take a closer look at recent marriages.

Saying it over and over – as parents, politicians and pundits do – is akin to a college professor telling her class that half of them are going to fail her course, or a boss reminding recent hires that within a few years, half of them will be fired.

The Dog Ate My NuvaRing

Just so you don’t think you’ll be reading me in this spot all the time, God forbid, I’d like to introduce a friend who will be guest-blogging from time to time. Her name is Stefanie and we’re calling her blog “The Crazy Stories People Tell Stefanie.”

Stefanie’s in her mid-20s, from the Bay area of California, and lives on Capitol Hill. She’s smart, quick with a quip and one of those people who puts a stranger immediately at ease. People tell her stuff. She’d make a great reporter.
