Well...It's the Thought That Counts...

I was snowed in at my apartment for a week (just emerged today). This gave me a chance to cross some movies off of my “watch when your roommate is gone so she doesn’t mock you” list. This is code for bad romantic comedies. I’ve noticed one major theme in all of them: the grand gesture. In the movies, the grand gesture is always followed up by “they lived happily ever after.” But in real life, the grand gesture can go horribly wrong and be downright awkward.

Exhibit A (and the only one you’ll be seeing here): Hippie Chick and The Overachiever.

Teen Moms Are Everywhere--and Some of Them Aren't Teens

MTV’s new show Teen Mom premiered last week and introduced us to the difficulties involved with actually raising a child after pregnancy and delivery. Farrah wants to date, Maci and Ryan are attempting to get along and plan a wedding, Amber is trying to find balance in her life with baby Leah and boyfriend Gary, and Catelynn and Tyler are working to get back to normal after their adoption experience.

Sexual Assault on Campus: Can There Be Justice Without Transparency?

Of all the college women I’ve interviewed who said they’ve been sexually assaulted on campus – and there have been a good number of them – not one ever reported the attack to campus authorities.

Their reasons have varied. Maybe they kinda' knew the guy and didn’t want to make him or his friends mad. Or they were drunk and couldn’t remember enough details to prosecute. Or they thought they should’ve known better than to put themselves in a potentially dangerous situation.

Or, and this was their biggest concern, they feared that if they did talk, nothing of substance would be done.

Why Victoria’s Secret Should Be Your Secret Too

“I’m kinda in between boyfriends right now, so I don’t need anything sexy.” – Pam Beesly, while visiting Victoria’s Secret

Jane Austen and Rob Reiner: Ruining Romance For Real People

The other night I was out to dinner with Hipster Boy, Calendar Girl, Sunshine Girl, and The Philosopher. The conversation soon turned to movies, as it often does. The Philosopher had recently watched Pride and Prejudice with his girlfriend (because he is a good egg and will watch chick flicks without much objection), and it left him with some lingering questions.

The Philosopher: “What is with girls and Mr. Darcy?”

He looked expectantly around the table for one of us to answer – and was met with silence.

Side note: There was a period of time when History Boy awarded himself “Darcy Points” whenever he did something he deemed chivalrous.

How "Teen" Is Nineteen?

Even before it hits the newsstands, November’s Teen Vogue has people talking.

Why? Because the cover displays two 19-year-old supermodels, one of whom, Jourdan Dunn, is pregnant.

Critics say Dunn shouldn’t be there because she is a role model for teen girls. She makes pregnancy look cool - and there are way too many pregnant teens already.

Seen On Twitter: #whateverhappenedto Condoms?

We were pleasantly surprised to see the trending topic #whateverhappenedto come up in our "Condoms" twitter feed today ("pleasantly" because we're glad people are discussing birth control--the bad news, I guess, is that the topic is people not using it!). Anyway, I couldn't resist choosing a few favorites to highlight for posterity. Here are my top 11 #whateverhappenedto condoms tweets (with commentary), in no particular order:

'Bright Star': Naked Passion, Fully Clothed

In her new cinematic love story, “Bright Star,” filmmaker Jane Campion reacquaints us with delicious sexual passion and reminds us that it need not be accompanied by intercourse. I, for one, thank her for that.

Not that I have anything against "doing it." But many of today’s media and entertainment figures, as well as political pundits on the right and left, reduce the bountiful buffet that is sex to one dish – intercourse. One kiss and the young partners are bouncing on 300-thread count sheets. A sexy voice, lingering glance, hungry eyes, stolen kiss, tender touch, poetic language…all are hardly more than appetizers, and easily skipped.

A Great Little Moment on "Greek"

Nice scene on ABC Family’s “Greek” last night: Rusty and Jordan are mid-hookup and he interrupts the action to say “I have one question…” and before he can get any other words out she responds with “Yeah, I have some in the drawer.” He wasn’t going to ask about contraception -- he was preoccupied with trying to impress her visiting dad and was about to ask whether he was succeeding -- but when Jordan hinted at the condoms in such close proximity, Rusty seemed happily surprised.
