Womb Service — Is It Really Okay to Skip Periods?

A number of birth control methods hold the promise of lighter periods, fewer periods, or none at all, namely the Mirena intrauterine device, the Depo Provera shot, the single-rod implant Implanon, or continuous use of the pill or NuvaRing. To some of us, the idea of effective contraception and no periods sounds like menstrual nirvana. But for others there is a niggling worry: is it really okay to skip periods?

Science and Sense in the Abstinence Wars

News organizations carried a story last week about a successful, experimental sex ed curriculum focused on abstinence. What follows is my blog post about the study, which ran in The Huffington Post, and a short sample of reaction to the post.

When I read the lead paragraph of last week’s news story on the success of an experimental, abstinence-only sex ed curriculum, my first thought was: “Yes, but…”

Here’s a secret you may not know about doctors: female doctors use IUDs 2-5 times more often than women who aren’t doctors. Maybe it’s because doctors know the intrauterine device (IUD) is safe, low-maintenance, and super-effective.

When It Comes to Pulling Out, Stefanie Keeps Her Mouth Shut

The other day I was sitting in church with Captain Hilarious, minding my own business, when the pastor started reading from the Bible. To be honest, I wasn’t really paying attention. I don’t have the best track record when it comes to behaving in church. Most of the time, I just try to get through the sermon without audibly laughing – this is much harder than you might imagine.

So all I heard the pastor say was, “Genesis 38:8-10, from the NIV. . .yada yada yada…” and I tuned out.

It’s All Fun and Games Until You Lose a Condom in Your Vajayjay. . .

The other night I was talking to Polly Pocket. We were doing our work version of “Best Week Ever.” Basically you have thirty seconds to tell the other one what you are doing at work before you dive into the really important stuff . . . sex and gossip. In an effort to protect Polly Pocket’s identity, I won’t tell you what she was doing at work.

I was talking about how I was trying to find young adults to talk about some new research we had coming out called The Fog Zone.

Polly Pocket: “Do I have to drive with my brights on when I’m in the ‘The Fog Zone'?”

The Baby Fog: Are Fantasies of Family Affecting Your Behavior?

Many young adults are having unprotected sex in spite of the fact that they say they’re not ready for a baby.

Laura Sessions Stepp talks to Kelleen Kaye, co-author of a new report examining young adults’ knowledge, attitudes, and behavior with regard to sex, contraception, and pregnancy planning. We also hear from 20-somethings about where they stand on the prospect of having a baby—right now. [11 min 16 sec]

So Reckless Girl and The Ex Walk Into a European Pharmacy...

The other day, Sunshine Girl told me the following story about her vacation in Europe.

While on vacation, Sunshine Girl and her two friends, we will call them Responsible Girl and Reckless Girl, decided to meet up with The Ex of Reckless Girl and his friends at a bar. They ended up getting smashed, eating a lot of potato chips, and dancing the night away. Innocent enough. Or so she thought.

The next morning Sunshine Girl woke up to find two very hung-over girls, which was not surprising considering how much they had to drink. But the real story of the night wouldn’t be fully known until weeks later, once they were back in the US of A.

The story goes like this.

The Hills Are Alive With The Sound of Really, Really Bad Ideas. . .

I should first admit that I don’t watch The Hills. I have a basic knowledge of the evolution of the show: it was born out of Laguna Beach, produced the spinoff The City, and it is chock-full of drama and lots and lots of good old-fashioned manipulation. The other day my friend sent me this clip with the warning: “It may make your head explode.”
